Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Hus
  • Caused by Shiga-like toxin O157:H7 E. Coli
    • toxin damages the endothelium, promotes vasoconstriction and necrosis and thromosis
    • organism is rampant in undercooked beef
  • Clinical findings
    • most often children
    • fever, hemolytic anemia, renal failure, thrombocytopenia
    • renal involvement - 25% progress to CRF
