Thyroid Hormone Synthesis
  • Trapping of iodide= TSH mediated
  • Oxidation of iodides to iodine= peroxidase mediated
  • Organification > iodine + tyrosine> MIT/DIT (TSH-mediated)
  • MIT + DIT= T3 (triiodothyronine)
  • DIT + DIT= T4 (thyroxine)
  • These hormones are stored a colloid (released via TSH)
  • Bound to TBG (thyroid binding globulin) after proteolysis of colloid
  • Free T3 is biologically active hormone
  • Most abundant is Free T4
  • FT4/FT3 has negative feedback on TSH
